In this 6-week hand-building workshop, we’ll meet once a week for 2 hours, all materials included. We encourage all participants in the class so enroll in their membership to access open studio time.
You’ll learn core hand building techniques—such as pinching, coiling, and slab building—to create both functional and sculptural pieces. We’ll also explore surface decoration with underglazes and slips, using methods like inlay and sgraffito.
Class Outline
Day 1 – Introduction to coils and pinch pots
Day 2 – Slab building: stamps and inlay with slips/underglaze
Day 3 – Slab building continued: introduction to sgraffito
Day 4 – Open project: expand into functional or sculptural forms using learned techniques
Day 5 – Open project: final handbuilding session
Day 6 – Glazing: pieces will be fired and ready for pickup 3–4 weeks after class
Time: 3 hours total (in two sessions)
Get your hands dirty in our brand-new, two-part Hand-Building Workshop! If you’ve always wanted to try pottery but prefer a relaxed, highly creative environment where you have total control over your design, this is the perfect experience for you. No wheel required, and absolutely zero experience necessary.
You will join us for two specific dates: one session to build your piece, and one session the following week to decorate it.
How It Works:
Part 1: The Making (2 Hours): Our expert instructors will guide you through the fundamentals of shaping, joining, and texturing your clay. You’ll spend the session designing and building your unique project from scratch.
The In-Between: We will carefully dry and bisque-fire your piece in our kilns so it’s ready for the final touch.
Part 2: The Glazing (1 Hour — Exactly One Week Later): Return to the studio to bring your piece to life with color! You’ll learn how to apply our vibrant underglazes and paints to customize your creation exactly how you want it.
We keep our class sizes small so everyone gets plenty of hands-on guidance, which means spots are limited. If your plans change, here is our policy:
Cancellations: > * 15+ days notice: Full refund.
2-15 days notice: 50% refund.
Less than 24 hours notice: Non-refundable.
Rescheduling: Requests to change your class dates must be made before your first session.
No-Shows: Missing your class without notice results in a forfeit of the booking. It cannot be refunded or rescheduled.
How to request: Please send all cancellation or rescheduling requests in writing to info@mudd-studio.com. Approved refunds will be processed within 1–2 business days.
