Frequently Asked Questions

“Why is there a waiting period for the membership?”

We have a limited number of spots. As soon as a shelf opens, we will send you an invite. Please be patient as your request is taken seriously. In the meantime, a workshop would be a great way to start or continue your ceramic journey.

“Do you give preference to certain applicants”

Yes, we do! We give priority to applicants who have taken a workshop or class with us. We've found this is the best way to ensure new members are already familiar with our studio and dedicated to the craft, which helps us build a thriving community.

After that, we welcome experienced potters. If you're new to ceramics, we highly recommend trying a workshop first—it's the perfect way to see if our studio is the right fit for you before you apply for a membership.

“I’m an experienced potter, and I will be visiting the island for a month. Can you reserve me a temporary membership?”

We’d love to have you and get to know you as we love our community of potters! However, we cannot guarantee there will be a spot available. Please email us 1 month prior to your arrival.

“Can I join with my child in a family membership”

We love that you want to share your passion for ceramics with your child! Your family membership allows them to visit, but we ask that you follow a few guidelines to ensure their safety and maintain a focused environment for our members:

  • They must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times.

  • They can only be in the studio during our business hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Our equipment, including the fast-moving wheels, is designed for adult use and can pose a significant hazard to a child. We want every member to have a peaceful space to explore their creativity.

For a safer, more hands-on experience for your child, a Guest Pass with a member is a great option. This allows them to get one-on-one time on a machine with your guidance, ensuring they can enjoy the craft safely.

“ I would like to bring my own clay and glazes, is that possible?”

For the safety of your work and our kilns, we do not allow outside clay or glazes without prior approval. Our kilns reach very high temperatures, and materials from different sources can react unpredictably. This can not only damage other members' projects and the kiln itself but also produce hazardous vapors during firing.

If you have a specific material you'd like to use, please email our studio owner, Paola, for approval. We offer a variety of compatible, lead- and toxic-free clays and glazes to ensure the best results and a safe environment for everyone.

“How many people are allowed in the family membership”

Our Family Membership is designed for two people, who can be family members, a couple, or even two friends. It is not intended for an entire household or a large group. The two members share a single shelf space (24" x 18"). The membership fee is managed under one account, and the subscription is the responsibility of a single person.

“My friend (child) will be visiting for some months. Should I upgrade to a family membership, and then change back to the individual?”

That’s a great question, and it's a common situation here on the island, especially during school breaks! There’s no need to upgrade and then downgrade your membership. The best solution is a Temporary Guest Membership.

This is a great option for guests visiting for a month or two. The Temporary Guest Membership gives your guest access to the studio and allows them to share your existing shelf space without any need to change your subscription. It’s simple, hassle-free, and ensures you won't have to worry about changing your membership back later.

The pass renews every month, so be sure to cancel before the next billing cycle if you only need it for a short time.

To get started, just email us at info@mudd-studio.com, and we'll send you a link to purchase the pass.

“I will be away for a couple of months, can I put my membership on hold?”

Unfortunately, we cannot hold a membership while away. Please cancel your membership if you wish to no longer be charged a monthly subscription, and let us know when you are back so we can send you an enrollment link once as soon as a spot is available.

“I got a text that I need to clear my shelf, but I’m paying my membership!”

We understand that sometimes you cannot always come to the studio. A shelf that has been left unattended for several months creates bone-hard clay, which has a lot of silica particles. These particles float and are a health hazard. We care for our staff and our members. Bone-dry, dusty shelves have to be cleared for everyone’s health. If you plan to be away for a time, please place your un bisqued pieces inside a plastic container . And let us know you will be away so we can check the dustiness. If the situation is really bad, we need to clear it.

Memberships may be refused or canceled due to disruptive behavior, harassment of other members, or delinquent balances.
